Haibao is the official mascot of the Shanghai Expo 2010. The mascot silhouette is based on the hieroglyph “人”, that signifies the man or the person in Chinese. Also the Chinese hieroglyph , in which two parts support each other in their ascension, expresses the idea that people have to support and work with each other for the creation of a better life.
The name Hai Bao is created of two words, “Hai” which means sea and “Bao” which means treasure, the combination of words is a lucky name, according to the Chinese tradition.
The form of the mascot symbolizes, practically a human being, and especially the character of the Chinese people. The Blue color of the mascot symbolizes firstly the color of the water, life and the new way of communication of China with the world.
The mascot has a symbol within every part of its body. The hair is like the wave of the sea, representing an open character. The face expresses confidence and friendly character, The round, big eyes, represent anticipation of the exposition and sincerity, the rounded body signifies a good life, the fist that has a thumb up is a welcoming sign for guests that come to the exposition, the big feet that symbolize a rigid and stable position, mean the ability and faith that China can host an exposition of worldwide importance.
Medals of the exposition also contain the image of the mascot, and also in the city about 68 Haibao statues were erected and lot of Haibao souvenirs can be bought.
Haibao was created by Wu Yong-jian, a designer from Taiwan, being selected as the official mascot of World Expo on 18 of December 2007.
